Process For Minors

Review the timeline to see the process for minors to get a driver's license prior to turning 18 years of age.

1. Complete Driver's Education

This can be done online or in a classroom, as long as the course is approved by the  DMV.

2. Receive  DMV Completion Certificate

DMV will only accept the original copy with a wet signature, therefore if you took this course online, the certificate is usually mailed.

3. Go to the DMV and Take the Exam to receive your permit.

To start the drivers license process you must receive a instruction permit by passing a exam at the DMV, you will need to bring the pink certificate to take this exam.

4. Complete 6 hours of In Car Training with a Driving School.

Complete 6 of  behind the wheel training with a licensed driving school.  Lessons are usually split into 3 sessions.

5. Get Your Permit Signed by the Driving Instructor

The permit is not valid until the first line on the second page is signed by a licensed Driving Instructor. The Instructor is not required to sign the second line.

6. Receive DMV Completion Certificate

Once you have completed 6 hours of behind the wheel training with a licensed instructor, you will receive a yellow DMV completion certificate. This is needed to take the road test at the DMV.

7. You must have your permit for 6 months before taking the DMV Road Test

If you turn 18 before the 6 months is up, you are now an adult and  no longer need to follow this process. Please consider this before signing up for driving lessons.

8. Take Your Road Test

You must pass the DMV Road Test to receive a License to drive a vehicle
